Before we start the process of making green food color at home, please be aware that it will not be the same brilliant green you get from a store. As we are using natural products the result may vary every time from "not bad" to "not happening." To improve the success ratio, follow the below procedure.

The process and ingredients

To get a green color from a natural source let's use avocado. In the first step, peel the avocado and then blend the skin of the avocado to get a green color. It is used for frosting bakery items. Avocados understand the flavor, it won't dominate the flavor of the dish. 

The other ingredient you can use is spinach. Take fresh or frozen spinach. Make a puree of it. Boil it in 4 cups of water and then simmer it for hours. Now strain out the spinach it is the liquid you will need. Add this liquid to your foodstuff. 

You can also use Pistachios to get green color for your ice cream. Soak pistachios in water. Do not use dyed pistachios that are available in the stores. Grind the pistachios into a faintly tinted paste so that you can add them to your ice creams. 

You can also make green colors but add different colors from various sources. Remember kinder garden, to make green color we use to mix yellow and blue. You can make blue color by boiling red cabbage. You will get violet water and then add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to make it blue from violet. Then you can use turmeric or saffron to get yellow color.

Some tips and tricks

These techniques of making green color at home with give you mild green color to your foodstuffs. In some cases, you will get light green, pastel green, or army green. It won't give you results like the colors we get from stores. Also, don't get surprised to see how it works on light-colored foodstuff. Hence, to make food coloring more brilliant add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. It can affect the flavor, so be careful while adding it. 

Adding lemon juice to anything may turn it brown, such as the avocado. Also, serve it as soon as possible. Most of these recipes will flavor the outcome. Thus to avoid it use a substance that has a blended taste. For example, use avocado instead of broccoli, parsley, or spinach.


The truth is we use green food coloring once a year and we get it from the store. Finally, to avoid using green food coloring from the store we have some natural options. To avoid the feel of food coloring, set up the table with green flowers, napkins, centerpieces, decor, and green foods(like peas, kiwis, green grapes, lime slices, or M&Ms).
